Why not simply add ;SELEQ= as a :SHOWJOB parameter?

Then you can create your own JOBQ named "HIDDEN" (which you can do on 6.0
today, and which solves all of the background job management problems other
than not wanting to see them in a SHOWJOB), and do:

:SHOWJOB JOB=@J;EXEC;SELEQ=[JOBQ <> "HIDDEN"]

which you can put in your J or SJ udc.
