Christian,
FWIW, we played with IBM ViaVoice once , a product that would turn dictated voice into text. It needed learning initially, ie to train it to recognize the user's voice, you read specific texts to it until it got it right. Worked quite well much of the time.
In fact, once my daughter was using it once , and was interrupted by a knock at the door, and forgot it was running. When she got back to it an hour or more later, it had picked up voices in the background from a TV soap, and produced a very creditable piece of what I would call abstract blank verse....we all read it and had a very laugh.

Subject: [HP3000-L] OT: (somehow ...) Speech transcription software

Hi fellow listers,

I'm looking for some software with the capability of turning voice
interviews into text files, e.g. .mp3 to .txt. As usual for a one-time
usage, my budget is anything between, preferably, shoe-string and nil. Does
anyone have any suggestions ?

One hint : we're in France, and the .mp3 files my wife has to turn into text
are in French. I do not have the slightest idea whether that makes a
difference, but in case it does, I'm mentioning it.

Thanks on anticipation for any valuable input.

Christian
