Here's the question (for today).

We have a software application from an IBM that controls (sends output
to) specific spooled printers.  I forget if this is using IMF or what;
that is not important. The output is small broadcast messages that only
take up 10-20 lines and don't print very often. But when they have to
print, it is VERY important (police stuff).

Currently we have two such printers. One is a HP2563 with short paper
and a short number of lines per page. The second is a Dec LA-100 (240
cps) that is over 10 years old. We now have a request to hook up
another printer in this same arrangement.

When I hookup a printer for spooling to an HP, I would like the "heavy
dutiness" of a Laserjet (even if it is a Laserjet III or IV). The users
don't like that as a printer since it will waste a full sheet of paper
for a very small message. One idea is to get our standard PC dot matrix
printer (Lexmark 2381+) with a serial interface, printer type 18 (like
the LA100) and be done with it. I'm a little skiddish about this type
of printer for this type of important work.

That was a very long way of asking: Is there a good printer (dot
matrix)that is used by many of you in a spooled environment that does
not cost an arm and a leg (for purchase, or maintanence)?

TIA

/alan
