Hopefully, the following web site will answer the question of the "S." in Harry
Truman's name. From the Truman Presidential Library itself:

        http://www.trumanlibrary.org/speriod.htm

I've seen arguments both ways regarding the "S." Living in Independence,
MO, Truman's home town, I've see it both ways, with and without the period.
But the web site above gives a good explanation.

I think the issue is the period after the S. If the S stood for something,
e.g. Sergei, then it is an abbreviation and should have a period. If as
other times stated it stood for nothing i.e. his whole middle name was S
then there should be no period.

It's clear that I am getting very dense, but I'll be damned (Harry S.
Truman-speak) if I can see what's wrong with the spelling of "Harry S.
Truman." It's the same way he spelled it (see, e.g.,
http://www.sandia.gov/Truman.htm), and by God, if anyone should know how to
spell his own name, it's Harry!
