So, the problem seems to be related to the 'Fast Save' feature of Word. Fast
Save has been problematic in the past (seems okay in Word 2000) where your
document would get completely trashed. It appears you can avoid having older
text show up by turning off Allow Fast Saves at the Tools|Options|Save tab.

It's true, but it isn't new; this has been known, commented on in the
