There is indeed. There's an escape sequence - <esc>&oB/C/F if I recall.
They vary slightly depending on which terminal emulator you're using; and
some forms (B/C?) return a status code (Success/Fail) which you need to
read, while I think the &oF format executes the command with no status
return.

They each simply execute a PC command, which can include starting a DOS
shell or running a program etc.

Not sure where they're documented, but we use them in NetMail/3000 to
execute various helper apps when reading certain types of email messages in
an emulator session.
