a.) As Denys mentions, several solutions, including <<plug alert>>
     ORBiT software's BACKUP/3000 <<end plug alert>> will support
     DLT4000/4700 tape drives on the HP3000.

     b.) As we have seen our users exceed throughput of 20GB/hour, why
     throw away that performance by backing up over a network that will
     only support max 3.6GB? The full capacity of your DLT4700 is approx
     550GB...backing that up over a network would require over 150 hours of
     network-swamping, even if you could sustain it!

     I suggest you would be better off to:

     1.) directly connect the 4700 to the HP3000, or

     2.) buy another DLT4700, 4500, or 4000, depending on your needs. Hey,
     even a DDS III will probably exceed the throughput you will realize
     over a network backup. ;->

I am not sure if you mean, a) Use a Quantum DLT connected to an HP 3000 to
do the backup, just like on your NT server, or b) Backup the HP 3000,
sending the data stream over the network to the NT server, thus using the
Quantum DLT on the NT.

If a) then yes you can and there are several packages which support this.

If b) then yes you can with <<Plug alert>>  Hiback running on Windows NT
and Hiback running on MPE.

Some points to consider:  The DLT 4000 has a native speed of about
5GB/hour, not extremely fast, but quite good.  If you go over a network
(10Mbps) you will achieve a speed of about .75-1mbps thus giving you a
throughput of about 2.7 to 3.6GB/hour.  You will get more because Hiback
compresses at the client (in this case the HP 3000) side. It may be
difficult to keep the DLT streaming.  You may consider backing up to the
disk on the NT server and then moving the backup from disk to DLT.  Hiback
has all the functions you need to do that. <<End of plug alert>>
