man formats the text according to your current TERM setting, even
when you redirect it into a file. You can temporarily pretend to be
a dumb terminal by saying

        TERM=dumb man sed > temp

this should not give you any funky characters in the file.

Having said that - just tried it with the default TERM=hp2392a and
it does not give me any funny chars either.. Oh well ;-)
