Ahh, "PEEKABOO"! I miss that program. Unfortunately that little
gem was not/could not be (I'm not sure which) upgraded for the
newer means of attaching terminals to the HP. The last time I
think I saw it was back on MPE III (??? My how time has flown by).
I don't know of any comparable program that allows you to duplicate
another sessions output on your own terminal (although peekaboo
also allowed you to "insert" characters into their terminal buffer
as well as just read it. Excellent for helping out a frustrated user,
or for "frustrating" a user :).
As for tracing the steps someone takes throughout the day,
the "SAFE/3000" (Security and Audit Facility) can log everything
a session touches. By the same token, you can use it to define
*what* they are allowed to access, *when* they can access it, *how*
they can access it, etc. This means that besides controlling who is
allowed to log on to your system (like other security products for
the 3000), you also can determine what they can do once their on
the system. SAFE/3000 is put out by Monterey Software Group Inc,
and they have a web site at:
http://www.editcorp.com/Business/MontereySoftware/
(I do not have a financial interest in them, I just host their web site :)

The only method I know of which uses the standard system log files
is to purchase HP's "Security Monitor/iX" product which then allows you
to log "successful" file opens. Turn on all file open/close events, and
either get or write a program to read the log files.

Subject: [HP3000-L] Session tracing

Greetings!

A person I used to work for asked me a question I couldn't answer (go
figure!). Is there a way to completely trace (by logon name,
session#,device#, etc.) the activities of an online user? Apparently,
she wants to see on a daily? basis exactly what this other person is
doing (programs run, files used, ALL activities). I thought of the log
files, but is that really complete enough? IS there a way to perform
this monitoring?

I recall an Interex CSL program that would display on your terminal
everything that another terminal device was doing, but I can't remember
the name.

Anyway, any suggestions at all would be appreciated. If you wish to
reply by Email, remove the 'x' from 'bobt'.

Thanks,

Bob Tyler...
