Hi Gavin:
 
I fought a similar problem last month at a customer site, and the culprit
turned-out to be a duplicate IP address that had been "accidently" typed
when the some configurations were re-entered to "put things back as before".
PING would work, but a connection would be refused (or similar inconsistent
symptoms).
 
Also, a "stub" or bad connection/termination in the wiring can
cause wierd directional effects between certain nodes (runts, retransmissions,
timeouts, etc.) Any EE text on Maxwell's theory of electromagnetic wave
propogation through transmission lines will offer full details .............
