One of my Computer Science instructors, gave the following tongue-in-cheek
rules for assigning gender to objects:
1. Gender is assigned to objects according to it's observed behavior.
2. Computer systems (hardware and software) are referred to in the
masculine. This is due to the fact that these objects always act in a
logical manner. They follow instructions precisely and always do exactly as
they are told.
3. Objects that behave in an unpredictable manner or are difficult to
control are assigned a feminine gender.
