Well, I decided to try installing a patch from the net today. I
noticed there is a patch MPEHX12B that gives you a new version of
the MOVER program. Sounded like a nice simple thing to try. I
read the instructions for getting the UNPACKP.INSTALL.SYS script
needed to install these patches. I Netscape'd it onto my
workstation and then FTPed it to my MPE/iX 5.0 system (in ASCII
mode) right into INSTALL.SYS.

I then Netscape'd the MPEHX12B patch onto my workstation and then
FTPed it to MPEHX12B.INSTALL.SYS (I used BINARY mode on the FTP
from unix to MPE, though I don't know if this is required. It
worked though).

I then did:

  UNPACKP MPEHX12P

It mucked around with renaming and uudecoding the file, then
complained that I didn't have the A.00.02 version of MOVER on
the system and told me to go to JAZZ.EXTERNAL.HP.COM and get
it. Ok, I was kind of expecting this. I figured that it might
not be able to install the new MOVER without a more recent version
than what we had to use as part of the UNPACKP process.

I tried to get to Jazz to get MOVER from there, but Jazz seems to be
down at the moment. Drat. I dug around and found Stan had a copy
of what looked like a newer version of MOVER, so I copied this into
PRVXL.TELESUP and tried another UNPACKP.

Unfortunately, the first failed attempt to UNPACKP the patch file
destroys the file (it converts the file in place apparently rather
than using a temp filename), so I had to FTP the patch file a
second time.

This time UNPACKP worked perfectly. It uudecoded, un-movered, and
copied the files into PATCHXL.TELESUP. I ran AUTOPAT.PATCHXL.TELESUP
and it created me a stream job, which I then streamed. This job
produced about a thousand lines of output during which it managed
to copy two files from PATCHXL.TELESUP to PRVXL and DOCXL (the new
MOVER program from the patch that I was trying to install in the
first place).

I then ran MOVER.PRVXL.TELESUP, and discovered that the patch had
installed the A.00.01 version of MOVER again, which was the same
obsolete version I started with! :-)

Kudos to HP for doing all the work to make patches available on
the net, but the documentation could use a little work yet (such
as clarifying the need for the current MOVER program in addition
to the UNPACKP script). Oh yeah, and lose the MPEHX12B patch :-)
