I've seen this with some older Sun servers, notably the Sparcserver 600mp.
The boards are *so* expensive from price-gouging resellers, that someone
with one of these systems in a mission-critical role, and planning to have
the machine in that capacity for some time to come, would do pretty well
buying one for a couple of hundred bucks.

My experience with a 600MP came when I offered the board on a Sun
newsgroup with a Supersparc module on it; I got an offer for a couple of
hundred bucks (which surprised me, since I got it for free) within the
first 30 minutes it was posted. I checked the guy's website and he had one
already for sale for $900. I ended up giving it away to a guy who happened
to have the VME chassis for it still shrink-wrapped to the pallet in his
garage...

Cheers,

Aaron
