> 0.) What kind of system is it in general (server, numbercruncher, workstation,

     Server.

     PA RISC

How many did you buy? Normally 1.
> 3.) What about expandability? Is there a special slot for expansion cards?
The system is expandable, depending on what you want to upgrade to. A
previous
thread indicated that it was obsoleted this year - this is true after a
fashion. From HP's
    web site comes:
HP will continue to provide a broad portfolio of support services for the HP
e3000 until
December 31, 2006, and HP will continue to sell and enhance MPE/iX and
    the HP e3000 until October 31, 2003.
> 4.) What operating systems does it run? Is MPE/iX something UNIX-like? If not,

to which class of OSes does it belong?
MPE/ix is a proprietary OS that has its own 'characteristics' but it does
have a POSIX compliant shell. (Unix like).
> 5.) Where can I find manuals, FAQs or informational websites dealing with
HP3000?
www.docs.hp.com has past and current versions of the OS depending on what is
shipped with yours.
www.robelle.com also has a number of good papers (check out the Library and
Papers) on how to use MPE effectively
    (with or without its products).
You'll probably end up using some of their utilities (QEDIT or SUPRTOOL) or
some of VESOFT's.
