If you settle for 3r party software, the Telamon Asynchronous Network
Engine is still a good product.  It provides a convenient "scripting"
language for opening up those pesky serial ports to an outbound modem and
invoking FTP at the remote end.

My guess is that it is still about $2K for the first pair of machines and
$1K per machine thereafter.
