HP already saw the "true value of MPE". It allowed them to sell migration
consultancy and services by the man-year. And everyone knows that the most
profitable activity in IT is not hardware, not even software, but services.
So they enhanced MPE's inherent profitability by dumping it. A one-shot
gimmick ? Probably. But, since everything in IT revolves around 18-month
circles at best, who cares ?

PS : My best resolution for 2004 is to sharpen my critical/cynical sense of
