This smells like an abort that I had a few months ago. Per chance did you
start running some software on another machine that checks that your network
services are okay on the machine that died? Checking that telnet is a live
in particular. There is/was a bug in the telnet code that if the connection
does not get fully established the timer did not get released properly. The
orphaned timers start piling up until the timer table is full, and then the
machine dies.

I've got a beta patch for 6.0 setting on my desk. I need to get it installed
on our development box and try stress testing it.
