a sore backside? :-)

> If you were the manager of a HP3000 shop,

let me define 'manager' at bit better (at least for me...). this isa real
'manager', a member of management and also very likely
to not be an mpe person. perhaps working for a company
with multiple machines, all with different os's...

(haven't heard 'engineer' yet...)

being a pointy-haired type, i'd be likely to equate this with a 'cne' or'msce' so
i'd expect a certain level of expertise/knowledge. while i'd
still ask if they had done system updates and made major configuration
changes, i'd have an expectation of what the answers should be.

general water-walking, like other 3000-l people do :-)

if they're a cerified system manager (csm) - then they'd be doingsystems management
(job titles so rarely have anything to do
with what you actually do....) i will say here that i envision
*big* companies (like the southwest's of the mpe world) to
be more interested in hiring a csm than the 'we've got one
little ol' 918 sitting in a closet' companies. there are different
needs....

i should hope it would mean added attractiveness(?) when doing ajob search. it
would be somewhat similar to having an mba (although
now that 'everyone' gets an mba, the comparison doesn't work
real well). provided the label means something....

for now...i'd say 'years of experience' should count for something. many3000-l
members (and others...) ought to automatically qualify for mpe
certification of some type. but after a certain amount of 'grace' time,
the only way to gain certification would be through testing. otoh, i've
seen toooo many resumes from people claiming (oh...) 12 years of
mpe experience and i wouldn't give them the time of day...so for me to
say 'automatic qualification' is probably wrong...so maybe everyone
should be take a mandatory test...i don't know.... - d
