In honor of the current high-level debate comparing MS and
the mac, I suggest returning to basics, specifically, the
First Edition of the IBM PC Technical Reference Manual (1981).

Turning to the glossary section we learn:

"ALPHANUMERIC: Pertaining to a character set that contains
letters, digits, and usually other characters, such as
punctuation marks."

And although "DSR: Data Set Ready, associated with modem
control."

We are advised that "DTR: Distribution Tape Reel."

Not only that but ...

"EPROM or PROM: ... is actually Read-Only Memory (ROM) but
the contents may be changed ..."

"K: ... to the tenth power."

"MNEMONIC: ... Usually has two or three letters."

"SCAN LINE: The use of cathode beam to test the cathode
ray tube of a display used with a personal computer."

"TEXT: In ASCII, a sequence of characters treated as an
entity if preceded and terminated by one STX and one
ETX transmission control respectively."
