Can't remember exactly what it is at the moment but we were given a work
around to speed things up ( I think we stored the directories on disk ),

We used to use it. The complaint I had about it was that the directory
is stored on the end of the last tape of the backup set. I had to
restore some data for an audit. It took over an hour to restore one file
and most of that time was finding the directory.

Example, it reduces my system's full backup time from 8 hours (STORE,
offline) to 1 hour and 45 mins moreover it's online.
