I think it highly suspect that for a warship due to
enter service in 2008, you would believe that it would
be running an 8 year old version of the O/S. Which
is not what the article said.

It said "Windows 2000 and its successor operating
systems".

I'd place an emphasis on the Word "successor" here.

A lot can happen in 8 years, even Atmarian years.
Afer all we can be fairly certain that in 2008,
Microsoft will own, HP/Compaq/Dell AND Gateway,
as well as having a large stake in IBM. It will
even have controlling interest in Red Hat and
Debian, who will no longer be shipping worthwhile
product.

The only competing O/S will be those perpetuated
by hackers. Who will have a difficult if not
impossible task of trying to compile on Microsoft
designed and controlled chips, which will back
channel the location of any hacker trying to
compile back to the character assassins at
Microsoft HQ, which will have moved to Beijing
in 2005.
