After a quick Google search, I found the original phrase "Now is the winter
of our discontent" to have indeed originated with William Shakespeare's
Richard III.

If you cycle back to 17 Nov 1999, you will see I posted the following terse
message (#069159) on 3000-L:

Does this make Lew Platt, the vintner of our disc contents?

This was in response to Nick Demos and a few other making comments about Lew
becoming the CEO of Kendall-Jackson and HP needing to merge with KJ.

The message was paraphrasing John Steinbeck, not Shakespeare.

Kind regards,

Didn't Shakespeare say something like:
'Lew is the vintner of our discontent'
?:-)
