>I'm using tomcat v3.23 but i've tried older v3.1 with the same results.

In the test-installation that I recently tried on the Invent3K machine,
I also used Tomcat 3.2.3 (see my posting under the "Tomcat and JDBC Driver"
thread for detailed session snippets, showing my steps and what MPE, Java,
Tomcat and JDBC versions used).

>I also placed tools.jar in tomcat's lib folder

Seems that my memory fooled me on that one. It looks like setting the
JAVA_HOME environment variable was sufficient for Tomcat to find the
classes required to run as well as access the java compilation classes.

I have lost track of the versions used and errors seen on your system,
so I don't have an immediate idea right now. Maybe it helps to compare
your setup with the steps in my "Tomcat and JDBC Driver" posting. It
might also help to test whether java and javac work properly when used
independent from Tomcat. I've seen, for example, non-SM users fail to
successfully access java due due missing libraries in /lib or /usr/lib
or "too strict" permissions on those libs or /usr/local or somesuch.
