this probably isn't very helpful but....  a ballot item for enhancing inetd is on the 2000
sib.  the ballot item doesn't really address the problem du jour but it's better than
nothing.  additionally, there's a ballot item for syslog.  as syslog becomes more
integrated into mpe, i think you'll find it the route for getting various internet
services logged.
