Oh boy.. this is Pascal/Xl code -- it's ugly enough as it is without linking
to libc calls. (As an aside, I'm not even sure *how* to manage that, anyway!
Although there are some libc routines that I would like access to.)
 
select() might work, if it works on message files (which I am pretty sure it
doesn't.)
