Jeff, there should be an HPSWINFO file on the system even if it has never
been patched - the first 300 or so lines contain other non patch related
info. The patch processes Patch/ix and Autopat append patch details to the
end of the file. If you haven't got the file then someone has purged it.
Try checking any old backup tapes?  Otherwise there's not a lot you can do
about it. I don't believe 5.5 patches are available from HP anywhere.
