I looked...I was disappointed ... that's not a white paper, it's
a one page summary, and it's conspicuously missing any actual data.

You might want to look at the performance numbers that Holger Wiemann
posted in Jan, 2000.  They seem to show that, in general,
you're better off with hardware compression and no software compression.
