Hello, everyone:

My dentist friends were quite impressed by (and quite thankful for) the
great response from the HP3000 community.

They were disappointed by the fact that there were no "packages" available
for sale (with or without custom modification). Tim Ericson
<[log in to unmask]> has a wonderful system that runs on many HP3000
computers but, for business (and other) reasons, his company is not
prepared to create a new software division to market this outstanding
competitive-weapon system to the competition :-)

My dentist friends liked the "go-getter" attitude of the many consultants
who offered very clever ways to work with them in order to develop an
HP3000-based system. They thought hard about the pros and cons of
developing a new package entirely from scratch. Eventually, after a lot of
research, they decided to go for an existing computer system that delivers
99% of what they need.

My dentist friends asked me to please express their heart-felt thanks to
the hard-working HP3000 consultants. I would like to add that I was quite
sad myself to see this opportunity for a new HP3000 installation go away.
The lesson, for all of us, is that we must get our collective act together
in terms of applications. This cannot be fixed overnight, but we must
certainly work as hard as possible towards that goal. HP's new Developers
918 DX program will help, for sure.

I am reminded that Cecile Chi <[log in to unmask]> wrote:

>(Enough said!)

I wonder if Cecile could elaborate on her comments. Anyway, if the HP3000
does not (yet) offer a ready-to-wear (or *almost ready-to-wear*) package
for her customers, and if a high-performance Macintosh solution that has
been used by four thousand dentists would be agreeable, here is the URL for
the applications software that my friends chose:

and here is the URL for the latest and greatest G3 Mac hardware and systems
software that they chose (if you don't know about G3 chips and how they
beat the pants off any current Intel chips, you owe it to yourself to have,
at least, a quick look):
