Well, it seems I'm not the only one with this problem. I heard from
another lister that he's having similar difficulty starting his network
with the 100Base-T card installed. We both have 997's.

Anyone out there with a 997 and a 100Base-T card working correctly?
We're on 5.5 PP4.
