Before answering the how to question ... WHY does the 1+ GB have to be
transferred? What is it that makes it necessary to do the transfer? Are you
loading a data warehouse?

How often will this transfer have to be done??

There are several technologies that allow HP3000 to NT communications with the
ability to select and return data to the NT platform.(JDBC and ODBC based
technologies are available from several sources).

It is also possible that SAMBA could be used so that the data on the HP3000
looks like it is on a mountable driveset on the NT box - so the data just gets
used in place.

The HP3000 has had several compression technologies ported to it, and some of
the file transfer technology has "built in on the fly"
compression/decompression. Reflection does Huffmann compression, and the
Telamon engine uses LWZ (sp?).

The way you approach this does depend on the frequency and selection required
...
