The standard 3000 answer is 'it depends' and 'YMMV', but here's a data
point from our system.

We're using a 997/600 with 7.5 Gb memory and three volume sets on an EMC
Symmetrix.  Each volume set has its own FWD controller.  Our 2 user volumes
each have about 45 Gb of data and the system volume has about 8 Gb.  Last
night's full system backp wrote to two DLT8000s, each on their own
controller, and used 6884 CPU sec and 214 elapsed minutes. That works out
to (96 Gb / 214 min / 2 drives) about 13.7 Gb/Hr/drive.

We found that our backups run fastest with the drive compression enabled
and software compression disabled, but the most significant factor seems to
be keeping the drives streaming.  This backup was an uncompressed online
TurboStore with relatively light background activity.
