Thanks to all for the quick and thorough info.
Since I only have Adager Model 1 I can't add the sort easily (without
dbunload/dbreload and I haven't done that since ????).
I called Adager (should have done that first) and got the procedure down for
repacking sorted and then fixing the path.  So I guess I have another
overnight job to schedule (albeit a short one this data set is 8200 records
and 377 Kb).

The performance issue would only exist if CATALOGUE-NUMBER is NOT added in
ascending sequence.

If the new entry's sort item is greater than the last entry's sort item in
the chain then very little additional work is required as the new entry will
simply become the last entry on the chain.
