Paul,

Not exactly a book recommendation, but:

I'd highly recommend downloading a version of Perl on your platform of
choice to play with it. Whatever book you get, you'll probably want to
do some hands on. I'm not a Perl person (not that there's anything
wrong with that). If you need a Un*x like environment to play in, I
highly recommend CYGWIN: (http://www.cygwin.com).

Cygwin a un*x like shell than runs as a process under Windows. I use
Awk and Bash a lot and it's just more convenient (and cheaper/Free) than
running Linux under VMWare. You certainly don't need it to run Perl,
but if you need to be familiar with Perl in a Un*x like environment, but
don't want to go to the trouble of booting Linux, CYGWIN is great. It
also has a version of XFree86 and XWindows implementation. I have I
running, but haven't done much with that.

Subject: Suggestions on PERL books

Folks,

Since the 'demise' of our beloved HP3000, I know that many of us are in
the
process of expanding our horizons by looking at different platforms.
I've
been asked to get involved in a project that requires knowing PERL. I'd
like to draw upon your collective expertise and ask for any suggestions
on
books or other resources that would assist me in coming 'up to speed'
with
PERL.

Regards
Paul Christidis
