Try this URL  http://www.hp.com/tape/unix-dds/c_switch.html  It isn't for the 1504 specifically but I would try the default configuration.
Basically switches 1and 2 are for compression and 3 is for MRS. If you don't know what MRS is then search the archives, there has been some
very good explanations from some of the people on the list.
