What I find is funny is that no one has read the line that states " I'm not all that PC-techy".

Solutions that require migrating to a new versions of windows or installing new hardware might be a bit daunting.

Software solutions are simpler and don't require such a dramatic change to the environment.

I would move to an SSD and forget about defragging forever. :-)

Rotational media is so last decade.

First thing I would look at is temp files and defragging.
Download a free copy of CCCLEANER. That help you clean your PC's of temp
files.
Windows should have a defragging tool in it.

Subject: PC tune up

OK all you gurus-

My desktop and laptop Dells are both starting to run slow. Both are good
units, dual procs, 5 years old, Windows XP. I want to keep them if I can.
Although I'm not all that PC-techy, I suspect they need a good tune-up and
what else? Reformat? Reload? What have others done do give them a tune-up
and stretch some more use out of them?

Many thanks in advance for advice.

Sincerely,

John Lee
