I did that. Even with the external power supply enabled, I still got a
message to the effect that my battery power(??) was low, and to press the
escape key to continue.
In every test I performed, it was ALWAYS with the external power supply
enabled. And, each time, my data was thrashed.

All I did was uncomment the CIC100 /GEN 1 line as well. Are you suggesting
that I should have utilized the Megahertz install procedure? Well, like you,
I didn't. And I wouldn't know how to now, since I returned the whole kit and
kaboodle.
I should mention how I actually utilized the modem.
I have an unused original PC2622 diskette, which I copied to my palmtop.
Even though it requires little memory, it's more than is available after a
normal boot, going into DOS and running pc2622 from DOS.
So, I utilized the "bypass startup files" feature (by pressing the alt key
upon bootup). I created a little bat file which runs the CIC100 program,
then initiates PC2622. It works great - except for the "low power" message
mentioned above, and for the subsequent mashing of my data upon completion
of my session.
Maybe I just got a lemon. Perhaps I'll try again. I really did find the
Xjack very convenient.
