The robot's name was Gort, and John Carpenter/Klaatu, played by Michael
Rennie, had Patricia Neal, the mother, rush to tell the alien, "Gort barrata
nictu!" in order to keep him from destroying the Earth.

We've had this discussion before, but the movie is a retelling of the Christ
story, although most people don't recognize it as such. A heavenly visitor
arrives on Earth, assumes the name John Carpenter (initials J.C.) while on
Earth, warns the people against their evil ways, is executed by a fearful
military, and is resurrected, ascending again to heaven before leaving Earth
with his warning.
