If he's on 5.0 or later, you can use the compress program provided in /bin.
From the shell >compress ./FILENAME
From MPE/iX prompt: RUN COMPRESS.HPBIN.SYS;INFO="./FILENAME"
(you'll get a resulting HFS file called ./FILENAME.Z )
