What Thomas is talking about is simply to force the DLT8000 or 7000 to write
in DLT4000 format on the DLTtape IV. This is essential if you want to be
able to move data around on DLTtape IV cartridges. When using a DLTtape III
or DLTtape IIIXT, you do not have to remember to force the DLT7000 or
DLT8000 drive to write in DLT4000 format, they will all write in DLT2000
format. This way you do not have to remember to switch to the proper
density.

Kind regards,

Denys. . .

We've just bought several Quantum DLT 8000 drives and had no compatibility
problems with tapes written on our DLT 4000 drives.

A DLT 8000 can read tapes written by DLT 4000s or 7000s. It can also write
tapes for those drives as long as you use the density override to select the
appropriate density for the target drive. I've been able to store files to
a 8000 drive, using a DLT IV tape with the density override set to match a
DLT 4000, and move the tape to a DLT 4000 and restore the files.
