Back when I was still doing some COBOL coding in a group environment, I had a
little program that performed a hash on the source code. It wasn't fancy[1]
but it returned a hash string that I fed to the $Version directive. The hash
was then viewable in the object. (VERSION.PUB.SYS)

1. A smarter hash would have ignored comments so that a change to the comments
would not have required a recompile...
