Just to give everyone an update...

We have three of the OLPC.   While I am thrilled with the design, connectivity, and community effort, there are a couple things that make the OLPC impossible to work with.

1) the keyboard is simply too small for adult fingers.  While this may not seem to be a problem for the kids who use them, guess who will end up doing support for them.  :-)

2) The CPU is woefully underpowered for anything but the lightest of tasks.  It takes a couple minutes for Firefox to start up.  Don't even think about YOUTUBE or any streaming videos.  I believe the CPU is running at 433mhz.

3) I have yet to be able to get flash working.

4) Disc spaces is very limited, 4GB with 256

5) it can only address a 2GB flash drive.

While it is a great learning tool, especially for third world children... any child born in the US that access to 'other' computers, will quickly get tired of the performance.

Please donate, but if you want a laptop for your child, consider Eee PC, Dell's new mini, or the plethora of netbooks available.

IMHO,

-Craig
