Reading your post again underlines how obviously intelligent people such
as Wirt, Fred, John and Richard can continue to evade reality. Fred
posted his request for information about the demands of the terrorists
and what it would take to appease them:

I suggest that our strategy include a serious effort to find out WHY
terrorists resort to such violent acts.

What is the nature of their grievances? Is there some way we can
alleviate them?

There may be other missing elements.

Suggestions? Comments?

I was most informative, imminently correct and extremely succinct when I
replied:
"They want you DEAD." I thought that Fred and others would understand.
I was wrong.

To back up my explanation, I posted a link to the full text of OBL's
demands.

Perhaps this was too subtle for you John, so let me try to sum up these
demands. If you are not immediately ready to convert to Islam, the
Wahabi version of Islam to be very precise, surrender all your worldly
possessions to whomever the terrorists dictate, place your womenfolk in
abject bondage as non-human and spend the rest of your life groveling,
they want you dead.

Merry Christmas.

Reading these two threads, it amazes me that such obviously intelligent
people such as Chuck, Tim and Denys can demonstrate such blinkered and
biased thinking while managing to miss all the points posted by Wirt,
Fred and Richard. Yes, we've been here before and both camps will
probably continue to express their differences in no uncertain terms.

However, let me just take this opportunity to remind the above that it
is Christmas time, in which a spirit of forgiveness and coming together
is the main constituent.

Therefore, I would like to wish all members of the HP3000-l listserver
and all members of the MPE community a very Merry Christmas and all the
best for the New Year.

Cheers,

John Dunlop
