I use SNMP on my 3000s (at customer site I manage) to allow better
monitoring by HP OpenView NNM... Have used it for over 7 years there now.

There have been serious issues with the agent in the past (get it patched)
but mostly it works well.

It's been many years since I've written command files on the 3000 that did
any SNMP stuff; I did write one many years ago that allowed us to trigger an
alarm on the OpenView system from a command file on the 3000; it was less
than intuitive to write though.

OpenView NNM (and other network monitoring tools) can be easily configured
to do SNMP collections and threshold checking; where you browse the MIB,
locate a variable/field you want to monitor, and tell NNM to poll the system
every 'n' minutes, and generate an alarm if the value exceeds the threshold
value you specify.

By default, programs like OpenView NNM poll systems they find to determine
the system OID (identifies the system type), get location and contact info,
and interrogate the interface/routing table to determine what network
interfaces are present, what they connect to, and what their status is.
