David,

We're using VT over a WAN to 15 sites across the country at 56K and
Frame Relay, and response time is darn near as good, if not AS good,
as if the terminal was in the same building on the LAN...

Before using Frame Relay, we had dedicated lines and bridges - we're
now routing with T-1's coming in here, but the remote site has 56K
lines to the Frame POP and the CIR on the frame is 56K.

What stack are you using? We've found that <plug alert> WRQ's
3000 Connection is one of the best and fastest out there. </plug alert>
The TCP/IP packet size can be configured as well as other TCP
parameters, however, we've not found a reason to do this. We're
also using Reflection for Windows as well.

Also, Win95's TCP/IP stack with WRQ's VT library also runs quite
nicely over a WAN.

What speed are you running the WAN? If running on an analog
line, then yes, you will see degredation and slightly slower response,
but not so awful that it impacts performance, unless there are a lot
of users at the remote site trying to use termulation.

If you can provide some more detail, it might shed some light.

Best Regards,
Joe Geiser

Subject: VT-MGR, Packet Sizes, WANs...

Ok, I'm way out of my area of expertise on this one, and I'm
hoping someone out there can help me. It seems that there
are issues regarding using the VT-MGR protocol over a WAN. The
network guy here says...

"The issue is that the vt-mgr application which rides on tcp/ip)
uses a small packet and each one of the packets needs to be ack'ed.
This causes the vt-mgr session to be very slow. In the case where
your session spans just a LAN, you probably will not see any
performance problems. In the case where your session spans a WAN,
you will see problems. Other tcp/ip applications, like telnet and
ftp, utilize large packets and these packets do not need to be ack'ed
individually thus making efficient use of the WAN connections."

Is there a way to configure the HP3000 and/or the PC side to
increase the packet size used by VT-MGR? Maybe there is something
else that I can try?

Any help that you can give would be greatly appreciated !!!
