Denys Beauchemin gives us some more reading:

which responds (sort of) to one of Yosef Rosenblatt's points:

> When did it become a sign of weakness to admit a mistake?

When the reporter said the Bush seemed to have a hard time admitting
mistakes and asked what was his biggest mistake, Bush went pale, stammered
and stuttered something about how the reporter should have given him a
written copy of the question prior to the conference, and then went on to
talk about other things, finally coming to the conclusion that he hadn't
made any mistakes.

Here in Montreal, the obvious answer to the biggest mistake question was
scheduling the press conference during the Montreal Canadiens playoff game,
which may be the reason why my recollection of the conference doesn't
exactly coincide with yours :-)
