    Ok... I just went thru this one last week!!!  so boy do I know it :)

    Check that the printer specified on the job statement for outclass= is
spooled *AND* queued!!  if not you are "hot printing" and something "owns"
the printer so until it frees up the printer nothing else can FOPEN the
outclass device for $stdlist ... hence your error...

   Try
       SPOOLER {printer};SHOW
       SPOOLER {printer};OPENQ;START

This should help.

   Note: When we got this problem we were using RoadRunner err...
BackPack/iX errr... whatever it's name is today... and it got the printer
for $STDLIST but then attempted to open the same printer for the SYSLIST and
crashed ... taking the system with it... so beware of this problem... can be
lethal!
