Assumptions:

1. This modem port is located on the RS-232C junction panel
located on the rear chassis of a HP3000/9XX computer running
some form of MPE/iX.

For HP Internal Use Only

To establish the remote maintenance connection and/or validate
the configuration of the remote support port, perform the
following steps:

1. Open the front access panel.

2. If the REMOTE ENABLE LED on the front panel display is not
ON, turn the key switch on the front panel to the enable
position.

3. Press CNTL and B simultaneously on the system console to put
the system console into AP control mode.

4. Ensure that the CM> prompt is displayed on the system
console. The user softkey area should now display remote status
and a hex display showing the SPU status codes.

5. At the system prompt CM>, enter the "configure AP" command
"CA" as shown:

        CM> ca

6. The system displays the current modem configuration as shown
in the following example:

Current remote support modem configuration:

        Bit rate 1200 bits/sec
Rate select/CITTT 111 High rate (ON)
        System identification: [whatever]

Do you wish to change the configuration? (Y/N):

7. If you need to change the configuration, enter a Y. The
system displays the change menu shown below. Change the
parameters as appropriate for your modem, using the following
responses as an example:

Enter your change. (CR) retains current value.

Current bit rate is 1200 bits/sec.
Select the new bit rate.
        (0=300, 1=1200, 2=2400, 3=4800, 4=9600):
Rate select (CITTT 111) is currently High rate (ON).
Choose the new setting
(H=high or ON, L=low or OFF):
Current System identification: [whatever]
New system identification (limited to 1 to 24
displayable characters or space for none):

New configuration (takes effect at next remote connection):
....

CM>

> Author's note: the maximum speed supported is 9600 baud.

8. To enable remote access, enter the "enable access by a remote
console" command "ER" as shown. Skip to the last step if you do
not wish to enable remote access.

        CM> er

9. The system responds with the following display:

Current remote console access configuration:

        Mode: Multiple
        Password: [current password]
        Password faults: 03

Do you wish to change the configuration? (Y/N):

CAUTION! To ensure system security, you must enter a password
for the Access Port.

10. Enter Y in response to the prompt so that you can enter a
new password. The system displays the change menu shown below.
respond as appropriate:

Enter your changes. (CR) retains current value.

Current mode: Multiple
        Select the new setting (S=single, M=multiple): m
Current password: [current password]
New password (1 to 24 displayable characters or
space if no password is to be required): newpassword
Current password fault limit: 03
New number of password faults (Rang 0-99 or
space. Space or 0 will permit unlimited password
        faults.): 03

New remote access configuration:

        Mode: Multiple
        Password: [new password]
        Password faults: 03

Remote access is now enabled
CM>

11. Disable remote console access to re-secure the system.
Enter:

CM>dr

12. At the CM> prompt, enter "CO". This command returns the
console back to console mode.

CM>co

END.

Author's notes:

Cable required is part number 92219Q

Port use for remote session must be port labelled 'M'.

Ports labelled 1m, 2m, 3dc, 4dc, and 5dc are not supported by the
MPE-XL (and iX) OS as far as I can determine. In any case,
supported or not I have never been able to get them to work,
either as a direct connect or as a modem connect.

Port DCE connects to the DTC remote console port, if you wish to
use a DTC connected terminal as a remote terminal.

Port DC is of course the normal console port.

My guess is that you have a speed sensing problem with the
modem. Try configuring it to connect at 9600 or whatever the
modem port is configured for.

I hope that this helps.

Jim
