I am taking Neil's advice...

We have another group, who are yet unitiated into the glories of the 3K,
and who are looking at connecting their Winsocketed front end to our 3K,
and on the 3K providing their own BSD socketed connection to our objects
and our data. They are not entirely decided between C and COBOL on the
3K. Language preferences aside, the existing application is in COBOL,
and that application's development team (which includes me) knows little
more about the C language than how to spell C. While we are researching
g++ vs. C/iX (opinions and experiences welcome on this issue), we only
have the HP COBOL compiler on our 3Ks (and we are not yet planning on
getting a 918, nor would doing so address our requirement to have the
same compilers on the production 3K). So, COBOL is where we are
invested. Also, learning to program both sockets and C could get messy.

After some searching, I found Neil Harvey's postings on Sockets
programming in COBOL, as well as the libraries that an unknown
benefactor had provided. Since we are required to have the source for
anything that we do not have a license for (in other words, if it is not
a third-party product, such as Adager, Suprtool, etc.), I cannot use the
libraries without the COBOL source. Would the unknown benefactor be
willing to step forward, publically or privately, to either provide
source code, or assistance re-inventing this wheel?
