Alas, we're in London - not known for its extreme weather (except at the moment as we have a jet stream that refuses to shift north - so the current prediction is for a very wet Olympic games). 

Pre 2008 - when we used DLT drives (supplied by HP) on our HP3000s they were forever breaking down. 

Or tapes written on one drive were unreadable on another !

I think I'm going to 1) ask the computer room be not so cold, 2) test for humidity and 3) move the drives from the top of the rack out of the cold blast to a lower spot on the rack.
