It's expensive for the same reason Mercedes autos are expensive in the US:
1:  It was there first with an SQL (Mercedes quality firsts) product.
2.  Marketing and publicity hype (YOU gotta have the best and latest).
3.  Having developed a large market share they capitalize on it.

OK,  so the above doesn't hang together real well, but I hope you get my
point.
Relational data bases are "in", and Oracle is there first with the most.
